Graduation Requirements

Doctoral & Integrated Master’s–Doctoral Program

Degree Requirements

Doctoral Program

• Applicants must hold a master’s degree.

• Must take a minimum of four semesters.

• Must complete 30 credits of major coursework.

• Must earn research supervision credits every semester.

Integrated Master’s–Doctoral Program

• Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree.

• Must take a minimum of six semesters.

• Must complete 48 credits of major coursework.

• Must earn research supervision credits every semester.

Common Requirements: Must take advisor-designated courses
Must pass the comprehensive exam and foreign language exam
Must successfully defend the dissertation
Publication of at least two papers in SCI-indexed international journals(or candidate-listed) / National Research Foundation of Korea Journals (at least one paper must list the student as first author)

• Must earn research supervision credits every semester.

• Must pass the foreign language exam

• Must pass the comprehensive exam

• Must successfully defend the dissertation

Advisor-Designated Courses

Designated or waived at the advisor’s discretion; up to five courses may be designated
Students without an undergraduate major in psychology must include at least two psychology major courses

Research Supervision Credits

Comprehensive Exam

Doctoral Program	At least 20 credits completed, Cumulative GPA 3.0 or higher
Integrated M.A.–Ph.D. Program	At least 30 credits completed, Cumulative GPA 3.0 or higher

Research Ethics & Human Rights and Gender Equality Courses

Must be fully completed before the start date of the thesis/dissertation review application period.
Recommended timing: first semester after admission (available to enrolled, leave-of-absence, and completion-status students).
Course platforms: Research Ethics (Research Integrity website) / Human Rights & Gender Equality (Blackboard)
* Relevant information is announced through the announcement page on the Graduate School of Korea University website.
Substitution: Completing Graduate Research Apprenticeship (GRA511) can substitute for all of the above courses.

Withdrawal

Procedure : Submit a withdrawal form to the administrative office of the affiliated college/department.
Tuition Refund Policy : In cases where a student submits an application for withdrawal and wishes to receive a tuition refund

Readmission

Students who are dismissed due to withdrawal, failure to enroll, or the expiration of an approved leave of absence may be permitted to re-enroll once, subject to availability within the annual admission quota.
The maximum enrollment period is calculated from the original admission date to the dissertation submission deadline (Master’s: 6 years, Doctoral: 10 years, Integrated: 12 years).
Leave-of-absence periods prior to readmission are included in the total leave duration.

Leaves Not Counted Toward Leave Limit (Special Leave)

Military service leave
Pregnancy, childbirth, and childcare leave
Leave of absence for start-up
Leave of absence for employment or training
Leave of absence due to disasters or infectious diseases
First-semester students may not take leave (exceptions: military service and pregnancy/childbirth/childcare leave)

Change of Major

Application period: During each academic status change period before program completion

Change or Extension of Advisor

Change of advisor: Required if the advisor cannot supervise for more than one year due to retirement, leave, or other reasons.
Extension of advisor appointment: If the advisor retires, the student must apply for an extension within one semester of the retirement date.
* If the advisor is appointed as Professor Emeritus within one semester of retirement, no separate extension application is required.

Academic Status Change Period

Leave of absence, return from leave, readmission, withdrawal, advisor change, and major change must be applied for during: Early Spring Term: Early February – Late February Fall Term: Early August – Late August Detailed notices are announced each semester via KUPID, university notices, and the Graduate School website.

Thesis/Dissertation Review

Application period : Late April (Fall graduation candidates) Late October (Spring graduation candidates)
Announcements are posted each semester on the College of Psychology website.
Required forms are provided in the notice attachments each semester.
Application Requirements : Applicants must be currently enrolled (for completion-status students, enrollment in Completion Research Supervision (DKK600) is recommended).
Eligibility for Thesis/Dissertation Submission:
Passing the foreign language examination
Passing the comprehensive examination
Completion of Human Rights & Gender Equality education
Completion of Research Ethics education
For doctoral students: fulfillment of department-required conference presentations and publication requirements
